SME IPO

Reviewed on 24 Oct 2026 · Source: IPO Bulletin explainer; checked against BSE SME and NSE Emerge listing guidelines

An SME IPO is a public issue by a small or medium-sized company that lists on a dedicated exchange platform, such as BSE SME or NSE Emerge, instead of the main board. These platforms have lighter listing requirements than the mainboard, which lets smaller companies raise money from the public. The trade-off is higher risk for investors. SME companies are usually smaller, have shorter track records, and their shares trade less often, so prices can swing sharply and exits can be difficult. Application sizes are also larger: one lot usually costs Rs 1 lakh or more, so SME issues are aimed mostly at investors who can accept bigger bets. A market maker is required to quote prices for a period after listing to keep some trading going. Retail investors can apply, but the lot size and the risk level are very different from a mainboard issue. Read the offer document carefully, check the promoters’ track record, and understand that the exchange rules for SME stocks, including trading bands and later migration to the mainboard, are different.

Example: An SME IPO has a lot of 1,200 shares at Rs 100, so one lot costs Rs 1,20,000. A retail investor cannot apply for less than that amount, which is much higher than a typical mainboard minimum.

Worked example

An SME IPO has a lot of 1,200 shares at Rs 100, so one lot costs Rs 1,20,000. A retail investor cannot apply for less than that amount, which is much higher than a typical mainboard minimum.
